Taxi
The most convenient way to travel from Madrid to Toledo is the bullet train. The transfer to Atocha Station takes place by taxi, so that you can enjoy some beautiful sights of Madrid on our way to the station.
Atocha Station
The AVE bullet train bound for Toledo departs from Atocha Station, a stunning masterpiece of 19th century iron architecture! Before getting on the train, you can also take a look at the famous tropical garden located inside the vestibule of the station!
AVE Bullet Train
The AVE bullet train makes the journey between Madrid and Toledo in just about 30 minutes. Both in terms of accuracy and safety, the AVE is definitely a better choice than any other scheduled route buses, which can take up over an hour to get to Toledo!
Toledo Station
The Old Station of Toledo possesses a stately atmosphere, quite befitting of the town's main access! Its interior displays a beautiful Mudéjar architectural style, famous for blending both Islamic and Christian elements into one beautifully ornamented space!
Taxi
After being mesmerized by the beautiful Mudéjar decoration of the train station, we will take a taxi to the picturesque Old Town. On our way, we will cross the bridge over the Tagus River and enjoy some astounding sights of the city from different angles!
Alcázar (Royal Castle)
Built at the end of the 11th century, the astonishing Alcázar —also known as the Royal Castle— towers over the Old Town of Toledo. Since its creation, it has played an important role as the main fortification of Spain's old capital for over 1000 years. Currently, it is used as the National Army Museum, but castle still retains its 16th-century flavour and opulent splendour!
Toledo Cathedral
The groundbreaking ceremony of Toledo Cathedral, the highest ranked church in Spain, took place in 1226. The building would then be completed in a beautiful Gothic style 267 years later, in 1493. Many wonders await the visitors, such as the Bell Tower, the Gate of Forgiveness, the Main Altar and the Choir. However, the Monstrance and the breathtaking sculptural group behind the Main Altar are, by far, its main attractions!
* Toledo Cathedral is closed every Sunday morning!
Transparent (Altar Window)
Stroll around the cathedral and you may suddenly find yourself bewildered by the sight of an enormous window that illuminates the rear of the Main Altar. Then, countless statues of saints and angels —made in marble and pure gold— make an appearance, just as if they were about to descend from the Heavens! The rays of light piercing the window reach the altar through its centre, creating a truly divine atmosphere!
Santo Tomé Church
Santo Tomé Church is a 12th-century temple where "The Burial of the Count of Orgaz" —El Greco's greatest masterpiece— is on display. This nobleman, who ruled the village of Orgaz during the 14th century, was not only the protagonist of some incredible miracles, but also a deeply religious man who spent his fortune restoring several churches around Toledo.
The Burial of the Count of Orgaz
Hailed as El Greco's masterpiece, this religious painting depicts two miracles that took place inside this church in the early 14th century. In the artwork, the expressive, unnaturally stretched human bodies show El Greco's extraordinary ability to create a freewheeling and personal style. The work is widely considered to be the culmination of El Greco's artistic expression, and thus is well worth of being appreciated without rush!
Taxi
After admiring El Greco's masterpiece, we will take a taxi to leave the Jewish Quarter —where Santo Tomé Church is located— and head towards the Parador. This National Hotel, located on top of a hill on the southern banks of the Tagus River, offers some spectacular sights of the entire city of Toledo!
Panoramic View
Even nowadays, the medieval landscape of Toledo evoques the city's glorious past! From the balconies of the National Hotel you will make out a truly spectacular view of the Old Town! No winder, as Toledo's streets look exactly the same as they did when El Greco's painted them by the end of the 16th century in his famous painting, entitled 'Toledo Landscape and Map'!
Taxi
After inspiring ourselves with the city's impressive panoramic view, it will be time for us to go back to Toledo Station. We will take another taxi from the National Hotel and, on our way, will keep enjoying the alluring views of this World Heritage Site.
AVE Bullet Train
The return journey from Toledo to Madrid takes place, once again, on the AVE bullet train. The journey takes only about 30 minutes, so once you've settled into your seat, you'll be reaching the capital's Atocha Station in no time! Relax and enjoy the trip back!
Atocha Station
We will arrive at Atocha Station. The main building was built by Alberto Palacio, a celebrated Spanish architect known as a protégé of Gustave Eiffel, the designer of the famous Eiffel Tower in Paris. Here you can actually see the big influence Eiffel had over Palacio.
Taxi
On our final trip during this tour, we will head back to your hotel using a taxi! The trip will start at Atocha Station and take us directly to your hotel's doorstep!
Arrival at the Hotel
Your safety and confort is of paramount importance to me. As such, I will accompany you to the reception of the hotel where you are staying!
