Puerta del Sol (Sun Gate Square)
The Puerta del Sol is where the 'Kilometre Zero' point is located, which marks it not only as the centre of Madrid, but of Spain as well. The square is known for its many attractions, such as the old City Council building, the statue of the 'Bear and the Strawberry Tree' —the city's coat of arms— and the equestrian statue of King Charles III, who modernised the capital!
Plaza Mayor (Major Square)
Preserving its atmosphere since the 17th century, the Plaza Mayor has long been the venue for all manner of spectacles, from bullfights, religious processios and royal swearing-in ceremonies to weddings. One of Madrid's most popular places, the square is now surrounded by red-painted housing blocks, and is always busy, full of bars and traditional shops.
Mercado de San Miguel (Saint Michael Market)
Welcome to the most popular gourmet market in Madrid! Now completely renovated and transformed, the Mercado de San Miguel a charming food court offering a full range of Spanish bars and eateries. A highly entertaining tourist attraction, the market houses many shops where anyone can enjoy traditional tapas, wine and desserts... ¡Que aproveche!
Plaza de la Villa (Village Square)
As the oldest existing square in Madrid, it is only natural that the Plaza de la Villa is also dominated by its oldest building. The Torre de los Lujanes —as it it known— was home to a noble house of the 15th century. Standing in the middle of the square and looking at the buildings, one can see how Madrid's architecture evolved over the centuries.
Almudena Cathedral
The Almudena Cathedral —whose construction began in 1883 and was completed in 1993— shows a fusion of various architectural styles and was the site of the wedding of Prince Phillip —now King Phillip VI— back in 2004. Once inside the temple, visitors can see where the Virgin of the Almudena, the patron saint of the Archdiocese of Madrid, is enshrined!
Royal Palace
The largest palace in Europe, the Royal Palace of Madrid was designed by some of the most prominent architects of the 18th century. Following Spanish, Italian and French architectural styles, is one of the most beautiful buildings in the capital. Not only does it continue to function as the official King's House, but the lavish building can also be visited.
Plaza de Oriente (Orient Square)
As it's name implies, this square is facing the eastern part of the imposing Royal Palace. The Royal Theatre —Madrid's Opera House— is located on one side of the square, surrounded by a myriad of white stone statues that represent the Visigothic and Christian kings of Spain. The majestic equestrian statue of Philip IV in the centre of the square is also worth a visit!
Prado Museum
Take a leisurely stroll through the World Heritage-listed, 18th century Bourbon Quarter as we make our way to the end of the tour. This Madrid Sightseeing Tour ends in front of one of the city's main attractions, the Prado Museum. One of the most famous art museums in all of Europe, the Prado Museum often hailed as the best painting gallery in the world!
